Overview

Problem Space

Evaluating the fairness of term sheets from investors is crucial for startup founders since some outlier terms that the founders signed without acknowledgment could become huge damage to their company in the future.

Despite its importance, it can be challenging to gather information to evaluate the fairness of the term sheets due to information asymmetry between the founders and the investors, the lack of comparable market data being shared with the public, and the limited time given to the founders before signing the term sheet.

Business Opportunity

By interviewing 100+ founders in the United States and South Korea, JIGO.AI identified the business niche for startup founders: they want to know whether the terms in the term sheet are standard and fair compared to other startups in a similar business sector. In short, the founders want to know if the investors are treating them fairly with the term sheet.

The founders usually work with lawyers to understand potential risks with the term sheet, but the lawyers cannot tell the founders whether the terms are fair compared to others. Because of this business niche, JIGO.AI utilizes generative AI to analyze the term sheet for the founders to have a deep understanding of their terms and sign it with peace.

Our Team

Our team features a strong pre-seed AI startup structure thanks to having a PM, ML engineer, full-stack engineer, and product designer (me). We aimed to launch MVP as fast as possible to raise investments and gather early customers.

Feedback

Her solutions are, first and foremost, user-centric but also take into account various engineering limitations, constraints from working with other team members, and needing to launch quickly and lightweight for the company, making her an ideal cross-functional collaborator. She asks sharp, insightful questions that help her understand the work that needs to be done and consistently finds opportunities for self-improvement by being open-minded to other people's ideas and asking for feedback from others.

Nuri's strong communication skills and positive attitude make her a joy to work with. She always goes above and beyond to support the team and consistently exceeds our expectations. Nuri is an excellent UX designer and an asset to any team. She will be an excellent addition to any UX design team. I would highly recommend her.

Lesson Learned

#1  Learned to pivot quickly as an early-stage startup for the best outcome

I understood that startups' best strength is pivoting the design direction quickly compared to other big corporates in order to provide the best product that addresses our users' needs more closely. In the face of constant change and uncertainty as an early-stage startup, I found opportunities for growth by consistently adjusting to new business and engineering demands as a product designer.

#2 Learned to communicate cross-functionally and seek out feedback

In order to make the best design decision quickly without making any mistakes, I actively communicated with the engineers and the PM to understand any business or technical constraints I needed to consider to draw the best design decision in a limited time frame. After I understood the constraints, I made lo-fi prototypes as quickly as possible to share my design process and listen to the engineers and the PM's thoughts before making hi-fi prototypes.

#3 Learned how to advocate the design direction and lead design

As a solo designer in the company, I did not have a senior designer to support and lead me along the whole way, which taught me to make every design decision aligned with the company's North Star and advocate the design on my own to other PM and engineers.
